What does home mean to you? Home should be a place where families feel safe, secure and have everything they need to maintain a healthy and prosperous life. But having a roof over one’s head doesn’t always mean that the house is decent, safe or affordable. Home, Sweet Home?? For many of our neighbors, home is a place of worry rather than security. Home may be unhealthy because of the presence of mold, lead or other toxins. Home may be unsafe because of the physical condition of the house or the neighborhood around it. Home may be stressful because it's too crowded or the rent is too expensive. Families who spend most of their income on rent don't have enough funds to cover all the costs of food, utilities, reliable transportation, and their family's health. Studies prove that unstable housing can cause health concerns and that when it comes to housing and health, the cost of doing nothing is far greater than doing something. Healthcare providers tell us that there is a cure for this problem. That cure is a housing vaccine: living in healthy communities. The message is clear: stable and affordable housing is an essential element of healthy families and communities. Danville Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity has the “housing vaccine” that the residents of Danville and Pittsylvania County need. Together we can achieve this goal of creating a better quality of life for our local neighbors in need of decent, safe and affordable housing. A better of quality of life will mean a sense of well-being and happiness in not only the families in need but for all communities in our area.
