For the second year, the city will offer free bus rides on Election Day to encourage voters to get to the polls.
Danville City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to provide the free bus rides in the city Nov. 5.
Mayor Alonzo Jones and Vice Mayor Lee Vogler came up with the idea last year as a way to increase voting access and get more people to the polls.
All bus fares will be waived for the Nov. 5 election.
“There are people who sometimes don’t have transportation to the get to the polls,” Jones said after the meeting Tuesday night. “This helps them get to the polls.”
During the meeting, Vogler said the free bus ride option was well received last year.
“I want to encourage everyone to get out and vote on Election Day,” Vogler said.
The free bus service will be for all fixed-route and reservation-based trips.

In another matter, city council unanimously approved a resolution to accept property on Airport Drive from the Danville Industrial Development Authority.
The property is needed for creating a new right-of-way for two projects: one is a trail extension beginning on Stinson Drive and ends across the street from the airport tower on Airport Drive; the other project will replace the existing curve at the end of Airport Drive next to the airport tower.
