About a half-dozen children at Coates Recreation Center picked vegetables at the center’s garden Thursday afternoon. The activity is part of the facility’s summer camp under Danville Parks and Recreation. Jasmine Brown, site supervisor at the center, said the children tend to the garden and are able to take the fruits and vegetables home to eat. They grow watermelon, squash, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, blueberries, strawberries, rosemary, basil and mint. “It gives them a chance to teach them to be responsible and how to take care of something,” Brown said.
