Dr. Joel M. Singer M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Joel M. Singer M.D., Ph.D., 69, of Danville, Va., died Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Dr. Singer was born June 5, 1944, in Houston, Texas, to the late Stanley Singer and the late Mamie Singer. He was married to Susanne Singer, who survives, of the residence. Dr. Singer graduated from the University of Texas in 1966, with a B.A. After which, he went on to earn an M.A. at the University of Texas, Medical Branch in 1968. He later obtained his Ph. D. at the University of Texas, Medical Branch, in 1971 and his M.D. at the College of Medicine & Dentistry, in New Jersey in 1975. He completed his Residency at both the Department of Surgery and the Department of Neurological surgery at University of Miami, School of Medicine in 1977, and at the Division of Neurosurgery, UTMB, in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Singer taught Neurobiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as being published in Experimental Neurology, and by the American Association of Anatomists. He was board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, and the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Along with several other affiliations and organizations, Dr. Singer was also a lifesaver for the Carolina Organ Procurement Agency. Dr. Singer has performed thousands of surgeries during his life, most of which were performed in both Danville and Martinsville during the 25 years he practiced at Southside Neurosurgical Associates. He was an accomplished and well respected neurosurgeon. He has saved countless lives and will be greatly missed by many. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Pauline Callander (Rob) of Danville, and Jocelyn Eames (Bobby) of Ohio; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Oliver, Damian, Dorian, Kira, Cameron, Lily, and Isabella. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at the residence, 52 Lake Heron Drive, Danville, VA. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2013, at Norris Funeral Services, West End Chapel, 511 Church Ave., Danville, Va.
