Healthcare has changed dramatically in the past 75 years. Yet Danville-based Spectrum Medical’s place as a mainstay in helping to treat patients in the Dan River Region has remained constant.
“In spite of the need to grow and expand services, we have strived to maintain a welcoming and community-sensitive style of practice with pleasant and reliable staff and quality providers in a generally underserved area,” said Dr. Mark Hermann, senior physician partner who has been with the practice since 1990.
A history of excellence
Originally known as the Danville Orthopedic Clinic, Spectrum Medical was started by Dr. Prentice Kinser as a solo surgical practice in 1948. In the late 1960s, Dr. Kinser began taking on partners as the practice continued to hone its reputation for excellence as one of the most well-rounded venues for orthopedic surgery in Southside Virginia.
The practice has evolved as the nature of treatment has. Spectrum Medical has expanded its services to include rheumatology, physical therapy, pain management, spine, family medicine and clinical research. In the new millennium, Spectrum moved its Danville offices to a state-of-the-art location on Bridge Street in the River District. They also opened a satellite clinic in Martinsville.
“Our practice has continued to be successful by putting our patients first,” said Cress Gillie, Spectrum’s Director of Human Resources and Marketing. “Exemplifying the highest standards of customer service as well as best medical practices and a presence in our community, we hope these values will continue to serve patients well into the future.”
Numerous options
Spectrum Medical’s origins are rooted in orthopedic surgery, and with the opening of the new facility in 2017, the practice realized its goal of creating a combined progressive and convenient model of musculoskeletal care by bringing most of its clinical operations under a single roof.
Treatment options extend beyond the surgical arena with Spectrum. The roster of providers on staff, for instance, includes a rheumatologist to help in the treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, and pain management specialists to help with the treatment of chronic pain.
Spectrum also boasts a physical therapy clinic with licensed physical therapists, licensed physical therapy assistants and certified athletic trainers, who create individualized recovery programs using the latest rehab equipment, modalities and manual therapy techniques.
Spectrum’s physical therapy options are expansive. Pelvic floor treatments — beneficial to a wide range of patients including mothers who have recently given birth — are a specific area of focus.
The expansive services speak to Spectrum’s goal of creating a quality, convenient patient experience.
“We offer same-day X-rays specifically for orthopedic needs and often have shorter wait times when referred to our specialists, compared to other practices,” Dr. Hermann said. “We continue to welcome most all forms of insurance and payers and have served our region and hospital throughout our tenure. We continue to seek high-quality providers to join our practice and community.”
