With a need far exceeding supplies, God’s Pit Crew is asking the Danville community to restock its food supply shelves.
The Danville-based disaster relief organization also houses a regional distribution center to help families.
However, donations are down.
“When our neighbors face uncertainty, we believe no one should have to face it alone,” Ben Webb, God’s Pit Crew facilities and logistics director, said in a statement.

Through the program, the nonprofit provides things like food, beverages and hygiene products to nonprofits in Southern Virginia and Piedmont North Carolina, according to the group.
The organizations include schools, first responder groups and community agencies that depend on donations.
So far this year, the program has helped 250,000 people through 50 organizations, according to God’s Pit Crew. Along with that, food has been given out to 3,200 families through God’s Pit Crew distribution events.

“There are families right here in our communities who are making difficult choices about how to make ends meet, and there are organizations working every day to help them,” Webb said. “When we keep our regional distribution shelves stocked, we help those organizations keep serving the people who need them most.”
Data shows that more than 1 in 5 Danville residents live in poverty and about 23% of children have food insecurity.
God’s Pit Crew is asking for donations of shelf-stable food items at its headquarters and during collection events at local Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.
Food donations can be dropped off at the God’s Pit Crew collection dock at 145 Brentwood Drive, Danville, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Walmart on Mount Cross Road in Danville will host a collection drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 7-10 and Sept. 21-24.
Sam’s Club on Piedmont Place will collect goods from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 14-16.
Donations needed include canned vegetables and fruit, canned meats such as tuna or chicken, soup, chili and stew, peanut butter, rice and pasta, macaroni and cheese, boxed meals, cereal and oatmeal, dry beans, pasta sauce in plastic containers or cans, crackers and granola bars, applesauce and fruit cups and shelf-stable milk, according to God’s Pit Crew.
Anything with glass containers, beverages or refrigerated or frozen foods will not be accepted.
