Several groups at Averett University have used multiple outlets to help the Danville and surrounding communities so far this fall 2026 semester. This civic outreach has once again demonstrated how the university and its students continue to strengthen the region and contribute to its well-being.
Two such instances involved Averett’s Bonner Leadership program. First, on Sept. 22, the program served at the local Salvation Army Corp Office and the Salvation Army Thrift Store. At each location, the group served food, greeted guests and cleaned the facilities for a better experience for the clients the organization serves.
The following day, two members, Unique Savage and Tojazar “TJ” Green, served at the Danville-Pittsylvania County’s 2026 Campaign Kickoff. This event, held on Sept. 30 at 2 Witches Winery & Brewing Company, was the launch event for the organizations’ annual giving campaign. Unique and TJ contributed by giving out swag, taking donations and assisting in other areas.

Both efforts were made possible by the partnerships between the Bonner Leadership Program and the many non-profits in the local community.
Also, the Averett Theatre program was part of the Danville Public Library’s Arts Week. The cast of Hansel & Gretel was invited to speak to children at the Ruby Archie Library about the group’s production. The cast spent time with the families, reading to the children and sharing details of the production. Hansel & Gretel was performed in the university’s Pritchett Auditorium Sept. 23-25, with multiple matinee performances specifically for school children in the Danville area.
One Averett 110 class participated in a service-learning project. The class, led by Ashley Horn, chose God’s Storehouse to give back to the community and make new connections. The students prepared packages for the Danville community and helped the organization sort through expired food and helped organize items in the warehouse. A few weeks later, in October, another Averett 110 group returned to help out at God’s Storehouse.
Another section of the Averett 110 class, taught by Shelton Herbert, volunteered to help clean up Anglers Park in Danville. The students spent a day picking up trash in the area and helping restore the beauty of this setting.
These are just a few of the instances where Averett University and its students contribute to Danville and the Dan River region. Throughout the year, student organizations, classes and athletic teams serve the community and make a positive impact in the area.
