A June 18, "Forensic Science for Kids" class at the Coates Recreation Center attracted students who learned the importance of crime scene search and recording procedures, categories of evidence including soil, glass, blood, tool marks, shoe and tire impressions, firearms evidence, accidental characteristics of evidence and fingerprint identification. Students learned the three main fingerprint categories and the technique of lifting fingerprints using fingerprint brushes and powders. The class concluded with a tour of the Danville Police Department crime scene van coordinated by scene specialist Cpl. S.B. Canaday. With instructor John Wilt (a.k.a. "Sherlock Holmes") are 13 Danville Parks & Recreation summer camp participants who learned the fundamentals of forensic science. Camp Grove and Green Street Recreation Centers were two other sites for "Forensic Science for Kids" classes sponsored by the Department of Parks & Recreation.
